Poe Mill Achievement Center (PMAC)

Poe Mill Achievement Center (PMAC)

PMAC is a free after-school and summer program for under-resourced children in Greenville, SC .

After-school Reading Buddy or Homework Helper: Volunteers are needed Monday– Friday, 3-3:40 p.m. and Monday–Thursday, 4:30-5 p.m. from August–May.

Reading Buddy: Volunteers can come and read with a child for about 30 minutes. Children range in age from 4 to 9 years old and some are great readers and just need someone to read to and some are 2 or 3 levels below grade level reading and need extensive help. For the younger children, you would read to them, work on letter recognition, and sounding out words. For the older children, it involveslistening to them read and assisting with reading comprehension.

Homework Helper: Volunteers may also assist with the child’s (ages 6-10) daily homework. That could involve helping a child solve math problems or reading with them, then answering questions. Or it could simply be reading the instructions and making sure they are following them and getting the correct answers on their homework.

Time Needed: Volunteers are needed weekly for 30-45 minutes

Training: Volunteers should email Hannah Dixon (hannah@pmacgvl.org) to set up a time to visit PMAC and learn about the program. PMAC staff will provide a brief overview of the program and what is to be expected upon arrival. After volunteers visit once or twice and are ready to commit to weekly volunteering, a background check will be completed.
